Will Pinterest Story Pins Help You Grow Your Brand?
Pinterest released story pins in 2020 and for a while they were all everyone talked about. But the question still remains… are story pins worth putting your effort into?
Today we’re breaking down what story pins are, how to request them, how to make them & most importantly I’m going to give you my two cents on whether it’s worth your time.
Because of all the information on the internet about Pinterest I’m going to make this one as cut and dry and I can.
Not everyone likes cut and dry & if that’s you maybe watch the video instead.
What is a story pin on Pinterest?
A story pin is a type of pin that is meant to tell a story. The builder looks vastly different than the normal pin builder. The description box and how you tell Pinterest what your pin is about is also different.
But the biggest difference with story pins vs normal pins is the ability to not put a link on the pin.
How do I add a link to my Pinterest story?
You don’t. Simply put story pins aren’t meant to allow people to leave the platform.
The pin is designed to get people to engage with the pin or get the pinner to take action & follow you.
How do I pin a story on Pinterest?
It starts with collecting the images you will compile into the story. You can do this on your mobile device or on your desktop.
My suggestion if you want to batch your story pins is to create them on desktop but it’s certainly just as easy to do on mobile.
You will have up to 20 images or videos to add in your story to customize.
What are some ways I can use Story Pins?
I have seen a number of different takes on using story pins and for me I have been taking blog posts like this one and using each main point as a slide in the story.
I’ve also seen pinners repurposing IG story videos as story pins.
Here are a few others I’ve seen:
- Recipes displayed step by step
- DIY projects step by step
- Products curated in a collection
There are so many ways that people are using this creative type. If you’re looking for inspiration take a stroll down the Pinterest home feed.
If you want to see a collection of story pins you can head over here and take a peek at some I have created. There are some story pins examples there that may help you.
What’s the best size for this pin type?
These pins are the oddball at a 9:16 ratio of 1920×1080. This makes it perfect for repurposing your stories from Instagram.
How do you make good pins?
I would argue that good is relative. You want to create pins that attract your ideal audience & get found in search at the same time.
So continue to use keywords in the text overlay. The cover slide is the perfect place to put the keyword you’re wanting to use to be found in search.
Depending on your niche you can let the images or videos do the heavy lifting but if you’re in the marketing niche like I am then using text will be important.
So test out different variations to see what happens.
How do I pin a story on Pinterest?
You upload the images to the pin builder on desktop or on your mobile device. Once you’ve built it you choose a board and pin it. It’s just like any other pin at this point.
Now remember pins with multiple slides won’t pull into Tailwind in it’s entirety. Just one slide will pull in so you may want to just manually pin it to the appropriate boards.
How do you get story pins on Pinterest?
This is a common question I have gotten in my inbox…why don’t i have story pins on Pinterest?
If you don’t currently have story pins you can request them. However, I have done this on a handful of smaller accounts and they still didn’t get access. I’m not really sure why there are still accounts in the US without story pins but alas if you want to request story pins you can do so.
You will go to that article linked above & scroll down to the bottom. Click the button and request access.
Are story pins worth putting your effort into?
Some of you may be surprised by this and some of you may not be… but I don’t think story pins are something you should put a ton of time into.
Now hear me out before you just click off and decide you’ve read enough.
Story pins cannot be linked out to an external website.
Now why would Pinterest do this?
Yes, stories on other platforms cannot be linked until a certain amount of followers is reached.
BUT the entire point of Pinterest is to link your URLs to your images.
Pinterest went public in 2019 and in the fall of 2019 they released story pins in certain countries in Europe & the UK.
Why right after they go public and need to increase the amount of revenue would they release a pin that cannot be linked outside of the platform?
Because they need people to see ads & stay on the platform.
I tested using story pins on my travel blog and adding new regular pin images and my short non-scientific test showed me that my regular pins received less reach.
I want to encourage you to test it for yourself but I don’t really see the point in using story pins as a primary strategy on Pinterest because followers don’t matter and neither do monthly viewers.
So really story pins benefit Pinterest but in my opinion to measure success with a platform like Pinterest we are measuring traffic.
So that’s my two cents on story pins. I don’t want to discourage you from creating them but I do want you to know what they are, how they work and why a platform would promote such a product.
